DCHS Speech Places Third At Hill City Invitational

The DCHS Speech Team got off to a great start by placing third at its first tournament of the year. Sixteen teams competed at the February 2 invitational in Hill City.

Juniors Anna Larue and Alyssa Rippe and sophomore Ashley Horton placed first in their events. Alyssa scored 24 points in serious solo, Ashley scored 24 points in prose, and Anna scored 23 points in informative speaking.

Junior Jacinta Carter also scored 23 points in humorous solo. She placed second overall.
Also placing second was Amber Mason in prose. She scored 22 points for the team.

Anna, Alyssa, Ashley, Jacinta, and Amber are now qualified for the State Speech Championships later in the spring.

Qualifying for State Festival and placing fourth were Jacinta Carter and Chenny Langness in duet acting. Emma Merrill also placed fifth in poetry, and Ethan Merrill placed sixth in prose. Emma and Ethan have qualified for State Festival.

Whitney Wright placed 5th in original oration.

Other competing for Oberlin were Jasmine Pearson and Whitney Wright in poetry; Kassia Bryan and Chenny Langness, Jay Wessel and Haley Barrett, and Anna Larue and Makenzie Nelson in improvised duet acting; Hunter Nedland, extemporaneous speaking; and Ethan Merrill, humorous solo.

"Bravo, team," said Coach Leigh Davis. "What a wonderful way to begin a speech season."

Ashley Horton, Amber Mason, Jacinta carter, Annamarie Larue, and Alyssa Rippe all have qualified for the championships. Ethan Merrill, Emma Merrill, and Jacinta Carter and Chenny Langness have all qualified for State Festival.
