The Great Kapok Tree

A Play for Earth Day

by Carol Wasson

April 23, 2008

In preparation for Earth Day 2008, the third grade classes read "The Great Kapok Tree" by Lynne Cherry.  This story takes place in the rainforest and persuades the reader to consider the impact of cutting down one tree from the viewpoint of many animals.

Students were assigned parts in the story and then drew pictures to go along with them.  They practiced reading their parts so that the messages would come through.

Then on Earth Day, they presented the story as a play for the first and second grade classes.  The weather was beautiful as they acted under the big tree on the east side of the grade school.  Here are a few pictures of the actors and the audiences.
