Exploring with microscopes

by Carol Dixson

September 19, 2007

“That’s the cheek cell?   That’s sweet!”   “Wow!   Look in here.   This is awesome!”   Those are just a few of the comments heard recently in Miss Dixson’s science class.   The sixth graders have been exploring with microscopes.

First, the sixth graders had to learn the parts and how to safely work with a microscope.   They made slides using their own cheek cells, and then the students examined the cheek cells through a microscope.   This helped them become more familiar with what an animal cell looks like.

The next microscope activity was making slides with onion skins.   This is a rather fragrant activity, but it shows very clearly what a plant cell looks like.   Every student was able to very easily find the onion skin cells with the microscope.   One student said, “Man, this is cool!”

In addition to these two activities, students spent time exploring prepared slides.  They also investigated organisms swimming in water.   A sixth grader summed up the whole experience by saying, “This is my favorite part of science – the microscopes!”

This is cool!
