Austin Hendrickson, a seventh grader, won the local geography bee. Seventh and eighth grade students took a written test to first qualify for the local geography bee. The top ten scores were the finalists, which qualified the students for the oral questions.
The finalists were Nick Ashley, Regent Erickson, Kennedy Fortin, Kaine Fredrickson, Baron Green, Austin Hendrickson, Sierra Lohoefener, Garrett Scott, Kaleb Teddlie, and Rebecca Wentz.
The students took turns answering questions read by geography teacher Marlene Moxter until there were only two students left: Austin and Nick Ashley.
"I didn't think I was going to win,” said Austin. "The questions were pretty tough, but things turned out great, and I'm very excited."
Austin will now take another written test, which will be sent to the National Geographic Society to see if he qualifies for state competition. If he wins the state bee, the National Geographic Society will provide an all-expense-paid trip to Washington D.C. on May 25-26. The winner of the state competition will receive a 25,000-college scholarship.
