Hunter Nedland, Elizabeth Nedland, Rhiannon Davies, Jacob Helm, Nolan Henningson and Joe Hirsch are headed to the State Scholar Bowl Tournament this Saturday in Goessel.
The six qualified for state by placing third at the regional tournament held last Thursday in Leoti.
“We worked well together,” said Hunter, the only senior on the team, “each of us answering questions and contributing points.”
The fifteen schools invited to the regional tournament were divided into two pools. In their five-round pool, Oberlin beat Rawlins County 50-10, Elkhart 40-20, and Oakley 70-60. They lost to Sublette by five points and Syracuse by ten. With their 3-2 record, the Oberlin students placed third in their pool and advanced to the championship round.
DCHS started the championship round by playing against Syracuse and Sublette, the top two teams in their pool. They lost to Syracuse 45-30, but then beat Sublette 45-25.
In round 3, Oberlin defeated Kinsley 40-20, but then lost to Leoti in round 4, 50 -40. In its final round, Oberlin defeated Stanton County 60-50.
Based on the championship round pool play, Kinsley won the Regional, followed by Stanton County in second place, and Oberlin in third.
“We beat the first and second-place teams [Kinsley and Stanton County], so I think we have a real shot at placing at state,” said Hunter.
According to Hunter, the Oberlin team did really well with the Greek mythology questions, calculus, science, social studies, and the arts, especially the music questions.
“The only thing we are missing is a foreign exchange student to get the foreign language questions,” said Hunter.
Hunter also said his first reaction when he found out they qualified for state was "I need to talk to Miss Davis." Hunter, Rhiannon, Nolan, and Joe had all signed up for the speech meet on the same Saturday as State Scholar Bowl. "I think she'll understand," said Hunter.
