The speech lock-in, which kicked off the 2012 speech season, was held on January 13-14 in the DCHS cafeteria. It started around 10 p.m. after the basketball game and went to around 6 a.m.
The lock-in began by going over all the rules and regulations for the new season. Then speech coaches Dana Juenemann and Deedre Frasier explained the different speech events, such as poetry, prose, duet acting, improvised duet acting (IDA), oration, humorous solo, extemporaneous, and informative speaking.
Nolan Henningson and Amanda Marshall were chosen to be team captains for the year as well.
Next, examples from some of the speech categories were given. Nolan and Amanda did their duet, Cassandra did her poetry, Amanda did her humorous solo, and Nolan did his prose.
Then it was time for games! Many improv games were played, such as Party Quirks.
A large majority of the night was spent looking for speech pieces for the upcoming season. Team practices for each category were held as well as individual practices. Those planning to do informative and oration were allowed to go to the library to research and type their pieces.
At 5:30 everyone helped clean up and by 6 everyone was home again. Kaine Fredrickson had a good time saying, "The lock-in was a great experience, and I had a lot of fun!"
Over 20 people attended the lock-in including Nolan Henningson, Ganon Henningson, Cassidy Shields, Caitie Shields, Kaine Fredrickson, Molly Jansonius, Morgan Jansonius, Garrett Scott, Austin Kyte, Emma Borton, Haley Schiessler, Lara Zodrow, Jayln Shaw, Sammy Meitl, Regent Erickson, Zach May, Hannah May, Caleb Koerperich, Miki Dorshorst, Sierra Lohoefener, Ryan May, Cassandra Canto, Amanda Marshall and Grace Randel.
