Give our brains a break

DCHS Journalism

Sometimes the brain just needs a break.  In fact, research shows that kids do better in school overall if they are given “brain breaks” throughout the day.

That is why teachers at Decatur Community High School, as part of the Health and Wellness Program, are incorporating some type of physical activity or brain break during the school day.  A brain break is short mental break that incorporates some sort of physical activity to energize and stimulate the brain.

“Brain Breaks are a good way for students to jump start the brain during the school day,” said Principal Ben Jimenez. They get students out of their seats for just a few minutes to get blood and oxygen pumping to the brain.

To encourage all teachers to remember to give students brain breaks, the staff decided that everyone will do one break at least every Wednesday during sixth period.

School Nurse Jo Mason introduced the idea to teachers a few years ago, but according to Mr. Jimenez, this year, we are really trying to incorporate them into our classes.  “Our health and wellness committee met and discussed different activities to do during through the day," said Mr. Jimenez.
