New class is a favorite for students

DCHS Journalism

Last year, a new physical education class was offered to DCHS students. The class gives students a chance to try activities they may not be as familiar with.

Recreational Sports was started last year, and it is taught by Joe Dreher.  Mr. Dreher said, "This class was created to give students a chance to try activities they can't do during regular PE, and it allows them to do different things."

Mr. Dreher’s advanced physical education class focuses on weight training and physical conditioning, but recreational sports gives students an opportunity to develop skills in recreational or outdoor sports.

Seven students are in the class this year, which is about the same number as last year. Activities taught in this class include tennis, frisbee golf, golf, archery, swimming, bocce ball, bags, washers, bowling, fantasy football, pool, basketball, and many more. Students also get a chance to research topics such as hunting seasons and regulations.

"I like this class because we do fun things," said senior Kole Breth.

Senior Braden Beagley said he enjoys the class because "The people in the class are fun to be around."

Chelsea McCarty said, “I like playing different games and learning new things."

The group has been going out and enjoying Sappa Park recently, and they also are excited to start bowling this winter at the bowling alley.

Recreational sports is open to juniors and seniors who have taken the pre-requisite classes Health/PE and Advanced PE.
