Blood Drive falls short of goal

This year marked the 12th annual Blood Drive at Decatur Community High School. Even though we did not meet our goal of 56 pints of blood, the American Red Cross was able to draw 50 pints.

Eight students gave blood for the first time. The Red Cross likes to hold blood drives in schools to make it convenient for students.  "They hope they can get young people to donate blood once and then encourage them to become life-long donors," said Brenda Breth, who organized the drive. "It's crucial the first-time donors have a good experience, so they will want to donate again."

The Blood Drive is run each year entirely by students from Student Council, National Honor Society, and FFA. According to Mrs. Breth, it takes about 30 students to run the drive.  Students do everything from setting up, serving as receptionists and escorts, running the canteen, and tearing down.

Each year the American Red Cross gives out scholarships based on blood drives held in schools. The Red Cross will reward at least one Oberlin senior in May. To be eligible for this scholarship, seniors have to have given blood at least three times. The amount of the scholarship is based on the number of pints collected at our drive.

The next drive at the high school will be an express drive on either April 6 or April 20.
