Scholars compete in Colby

DCHS Journalism

Kaylen Ashley

December 06, 2017

What articles was John Brown holding in the John Steuart Curry mural in the Kansas State capitol building?

This was one of several questions the Oberlin scholar bowl team answered correctly at the Scholar’s Bowl competition held in Colby on December 4. The team consisted of five students: Emily Howland, Kaylen Ashley, Tyler McHugh, Kaden O’Hare, and Gabe Peter.

The tournament started off with five rounds of pool play, and then if the team had a good enough record, they would continue on to finals.

The Oberlin team had a 2-3 record for the evening. They beat Wheatland in round one, 70-35, and St. Francis in round four, 50-30. In rounds two, three, and five, they lost to Oakley, Norton, and Colby. Oakley beat them 60-20, Norton won 60-50, and Colby won 40-60.

Kaylen was the team’s leading scorer with 80 points, with Kaden and Tyler in a close second with 60 points a piece. Emily had 20, and Gabe had ten. The team had a total of 230 points.

Tyler answered the John Brown question correctly.  (A Bible and a rifle)
