Scholar's Bowl Wins Four

January 27, 2018

The Decatur Community High School scholar's bowl team competed in the Norton scholar's bowl meet on January 25.

Team members included juniors Faith Meitl, Kaylen Ashley, Isabel Grafel, Kaden O'Hare, and Alex Hayward and senior Emily Howland.

The team finished the day with four wins and two losses, winning against Northern Valley (90-20), Norton II (45-40), Phillipsburg (65-35), and Russell (60-30) and losing to Thomas More Prep (40-80) and Goodland (30-60).

Oberlin did not advance out of pool play even though they finished with the same record as Goodland, but Oberlin lost in the head-to-head competition between the two teams.

The Norton scholar's bowl meet has a unique category where a song is played and teams can answer with the song title for five points and the artist for an additional five points, but both answers are not required. For example, Alex Hayward scored ten points for Oberlin by knowing the name and artist of the song "Let’s Dance" by David Bowe.

The team answered all six foreign language questions correctly.  Faith answered three, Kaylen two, and Isabel one. The team also did well in the science and math categories.

Oberlin’s coach is Wendy Scott.
