The Oberlin music students were in Colby last week for the annual Northwest Kansas League Junior High Music Festival to perform for judges and ratings. The musicians performed in band and choir, solos and ensembles.

The Oberlin Junior High Choir earned a I rating, and the band earned a II.

"The flu/cold bug hit our groups and we were missing several kids from the band and choir,” said vocal teacher Susan Nelson, “but the students that were there and performed stepped up to the plate and gave their best."

Band director Devin Carey said, “The band students performed at about the level to which they had been playing in class. We were missing four players, and there were a couple of times where I think the missing students threw some things off. The comments we were given reinforced some things we were working on in class.”

Earning I’s on their vocal solos were Lacey Quintana, Landen Ketterl, Sierra Davis, Ellie Anderson, Avery Witt, and Malia Bishop.

Instrumental soloists earning I’s were Logan Hayward, percussion, and Ellie Anderson, flute. Angela Davis received a II on her baritone solo. The trombone trio of Gage Scott, Alana Bishop, and Angela Davis also received a II.

Landen Ketterl earned a I on his piano solo, and Brynna Addleman earned a II.

Two vocal ensembles also performed. More than half of the boys’ ensemble were gone, so they did not receive a rating, but the girls ensemble received a I.
