Speech Team Results . . . So Far. . .

Ladd Wendelin

March 10, 2018

With the 2018 DCHS Speech Team season over halfway complete, the team is beginning to see some promising results and great potential in individual speakers.

The team first competed at Colby High School on Saturday, January 27th. Those participating in the competition included Petra Trejo (Prose), Sarah Abernathy (Duet Acting with Petra), Nathan Cartmell (Prose), Dani Rouse and Faith Meitl (Informative) and Tyler McHugh (IDA with Faith). After some challenging competition, three students broke into the Finals Round. Placing at the tournament were Petra (7th Place, Prose), Tyler and Faith (5th Place, IDA) and Faith qualifying for State Festival with a 3rd Place finish in Informative.

Two competitors, including Stacia Russ (Poetry, Informative) and Nathan competed at Norton on Saturday, February 3rd. Despite some good rounds for both Stacia and Nathan, neither was able to break into Finals at the Tournament that day.

Next, the team competed at the Ellis Speech Tournament on Saturday, March 3rd. Entered into the competition were Stacia (Poetry), Nathan (Prose), Sarah (Humorous Solo Acting), and Bethany Mason and Dani (Duet Acting). While none of the other students managed to break into Finals that day, Dani and Bethany entered Finals with a 2nd place, 1st place and 3rd place finish in the three preliminary rounds before finishing with a solid 5th place finish overall in Finals.

On Saturday (3/10), Stacia, Petra, Faith and Tyler competed at the Trego Speech Tournament, with three students, including Petra (Serious Solo Acting) and Faith and Tyler (IDA) breaking into Finals. Despite some excellent marks from the judges, Petra finish in 7th Place, while Faith and Tyler ended the day with a 3rd Place Finish, which qualifies them for State Festival.

This has been an unusual season, with some standout leaders on the team striving very hard to break into Finals, and some new talent that is just beginning to learn the ropes of competition. The students are very much aware of the stakes and have taken into consideration the amount of practice and preparation it takes to be truly successful in their events, but they face stiff competition. Our goal is always to qualify for State Championships, and they have two more opportunities to do just that.

The team will be taking a few weeks off for Spring Break, before returning to compete at Phillipsburg on April 3rd, and finally Oakley on April 5th. The Speech season will conclude with the Evening of Forensics on Friday, April 27th at 7 p.m. in the Library. Parents and family, along with the public, are invited to attend the celebration of another successful season.
