The Decatur Community High School Drama Department will present “The Cat and the Canary” on Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21. Show time both nights is 7:30 p.m.

“The Cat and the Canary” was written by John Willard in 1922, but technical director Ladd Wendelin rewrote parts of it with modern references.

The setting for the play is Graycliff Manor in the 1920’s. The manor was once owned by a rich and paranoid man named Cyrus Canby West, who has passed on.

Twenty years after Cyrus’s passing, on September 27, his lawyer, Roger Crosby played by Zeke Jimenez, assembles the last of Cyrus remaining relative: Harry Blythe (Jack Mumm), Susan Young (Kaylen Ashley), Cicily Young (Petra Trejo), Charlie Wilder (Tyler McHugh), Paul Jones (Reegon Witt) and Annabelle West (Stacia Russ), to reveal who will get Graycliff Manor and the inheritance he has left.

This isn’t an ordinary night, however. The crazy maid (Esmerelda played by Bethany Mason) claims the house is haunted, an asylum guard (Hendricks played by Dustin Nichols) warns the relatives of an escaped maniac called the Black Cat (David Waterman), a family necklace is missing, and someone has been murdered.

Come see “The Cat and the Canary” to find out who will get the inheritance and if everyone will make it to the next day.

The play is directed by Janell Marchello.
