Kaylen Ashley Is 2018 College Prep Scholar

DCHS Journalism

April 26, 2018

QuestBridge is a platform that connects the nation's brightest students from low-income backgrounds with leading institutions of higher education and further opportunities. In late February of 2018, they sent emails to potential applicants for the program.

Kaylen Ashley was one of those students and began filling out an application regarding her academic standing and family's financial background.

In late April, she received an email saying that she had been accepted and was selected to be a 2018 College Prep Scholar, which means that she is eligible for the next step.  She will fill out another application that she will send to 12 of QuestBridge's college partners. QuestBridge's college partners include universities, such as Yale, Duke, and Stanford.

Kaylen was one of the 3,986 out of 11,628 students who applied that were accepted. Out of those that were accepted, the average ACT scores ranged from 27 to 32. These students were typically within the top 10 percent of their class, and 74 percent are the first generation of their family to attend a four-year college, which Kaylen is. Out of the Scholars, 40 percent of students were from the South, 25 percent were from the west, 19 percent were from the Northeast, and just 16 percent were from the Midwest.

Kaylen isn't sure exactly where she wants to attend college, but now she has a variety of options.
