New math teacher is a DCHS grad

DCHS Journalism

Sierra Lohoefener is the new high school math teacher at Decatur Community High School. Ms. Lohoefener grew up in Oberlin and graduated in 2014. She attended college at Kansas State University and majored in secondary education in math.

“In college, I actually didn't start out studying math,” said Ms. Lohoefener. “I tried three other majors before I settled on one that stuck.”

Ms. Lohoefener said she is really enjoying her job so far. “My favorite part of the job is helping a kid that is struggling and finally getting it to click for them. One of her dislikes is when kids say, “I hate doing this.”

She also said that the best thing about being a teacher is getting to talk to, have fun with, and get to know the students. “They are great people with unique personalities, and it's wonderful working with them everyday,” she said.

The worst thing? “It's not a job where you can just clock out at the end of the day and not think about work until the next day,” she said. “It's constantly on your mind and can even keep you up at night. But it's worth it to have a job you actually enjoy.”

“It has been a good day at school when everyone understands what they have been learning and feels confident in their ability to learn and grow,” said Ms. Lohoefener.

Ms. Lohoefener is the daughter of Mardi and Seth Lohoefener, and she has two younger siblings, Sage and Grady. Her hobbies include baking and watching movies.
