Meet Mrs. Springer - the new art teacher

DCHS Journalism

Jillian Springer is the new art teacher at Decatur Community High School and Oberlin Elementary School.

Mrs. Springer graduated from Cambridge High School in Nebraska in 2007. She then attended college at Fort Hays State University and earned a bachelor’s degree in fine arts in sculpture. She then went to Southern Illinois University and earned her master’s degree.

What would her students be surprised to find out about her?

“Before I came here. I worked for a blacksmith named John Medwedeff,” said Mrs. Springer, “and I love making heavy metal sculpture.”

Mrs. Springer is married to Colton Springer and has two kids, Theo and Oakley. Mrs. Springer said she moved to Oberlin because she has family here and because she got this job.

“My favorite part of my job is working with students and sharing art with them,” said Mrs. Springer. Other great thinks about her job are “getting to know the students and getting to be surrounded by art making every day.”

Her least favorite part of the job is cutting paper, sharpening pencils, and prepping for projects. The worst thing about teaching for Mrs. Springer is “not having enough time to give to each student.”

Her goal for the year is to create new projects that students will enjoy.

What makes a good day at school for Mrs. Spring? “Having good conversations with students, seeing students enjoying what they are doing, and watching students be successful in art. “
