The Decatur Community High School Scholars' Bowl team placed second at the regional meet on Thursday, Jan. 31, qualifying them for state. Team members included seniors Faith Meitl, Kaylen Ashley, Isabel Grafel, Alex Hayward, and Kaden O'Hare and junior Gabe Peter.

"Regional competition was a nail-biter, to say the least," said Coach Wendy Scott.  "The tension was tremendous, and we weren't sure, even up to the last minute, if the team would qualify for state. The kids had to play very intense rounds against some excellent teams. The best moment of the night was seeing the look on my kids' faces when they realized they placed second and would go on to State."

The competition began with seven rounds of pool play. Oberlin went 5-1 with a bye round, defeating Syracuse 70-40, Trego 50-40, Hoxie 40-30, Ness City 30-20 and Pratt-Skyline 70-10.  Their only loss in pool play was to Lakin 40-30.

Oberlin then advanced to the final round, beating Medicine Lodge 40-0, Ellis 40-30 and Syracuse 60-15 and losing to Sublette 100-30 and Trego 60-30 for a 3-2 record and a second-place finish.

Sublette won Regionals, and Syracuse was third.

Kaylen led the team in scoring with 19 correct answers or 190 total points. Isabel scored 110, and Kaden, Faith, and Alex each had 60.

A scholar bowl round consists of 16 questions: one foreign language sentence that needs to be translated into English, three social studies questions, three language arts questions, three math questions, three science/health questions, two fine arts, and one year-in-review question.

"They have loved competing together," said Coach Scott, "and earlier that day, had lamented how sad they would be if Regionals was their last scholars' bowl competition together. I'm so proud of them because I know how hard they fought to make it this far."

The state meet will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9 in Inman.

This is the eighth time in 10 years that an Oberlin scholar bowl team is headed to the state tournament, including six straight years from 2012 to 2017.  The 2017 team included Kaylen, Isabel, and Faith when they were sophomores, as well as Luke Koerperich, Adrian Chambers, and Emily Howland.

Oberlin placed fifth-at state in 2012, fourth in 2015, and won a state championship in 2016.

In the past 18 years, Oberlin has sent a team to state 13 times.  Oberlin also won the state scholar bowl title in 2003.  This is Mrs. Scott’s fourth year as the coach.  Marlene Moxter was the coach before Mrs. Scott.
