At the St. Francis wrestling matches on Friday, Feb. 8, Principal Ben Jimenez was presented with the Northwest Kansas League traveling trophy for winning the first ever league-wide food drive.

The Northwest Kansas league schools decided to compete against each other during their annual food drives, which were held right before Christmas break.  All food donations went to the local food pantry in each school’s town.

Food items were ranked on a point system with certain items such as meats, toilet paper, and cereal being worth five points, canned goods and hygiene items worth three, and ramen noodles and fruit cups worth one.

There was also a competition within our own school among the classes. The juniors came in first, the seniors placed second, and the 8th grade picked up third place.

The league hopes to make the food drive an annual tradition. The winner each year will receive the traveling trophy, which was made by St. Francis students.

We organized the NWKL food drive to have a healthy competition and help communities in our league,” said Mr. Jimenez.  “I think it was a huge success.”

Junior Alyssa VanVleet said, “I am very proud of my classmates for working together and contributing in order to win the food drive and provide for the less fortunate in our community.”

“It was a fun activity to get our school involved with not only our community, but also the other schools in our league,” said senior Drew Juenemann.
