Dani Rouse and Reegon Witt finished fifth in duet acting at the 2A State Speech Championship held Saturday, May 4 at Bishop Carroll High School.

The pair earned three first-place finishes and very high praise from the judges in preliminaries, which qualified them for the semi-final round. “They could do no wrong, it seemed,” said Coach Ladd Wendelin. “But as the day dragged on, fatigue set in, and the judges' preferences seemed to shift.”

In semi-finals they earned two fourth-places and a second place from the three judges, and finished in 5th place overall, which earned them a spot in finals.

In the finals round, they faced some tougher criticism from the judges, but they managed two fifth-places and a sixth places from the judges, which gave them fifth place over all.

This was just the third tournament for Dani and Reegon.  They first performed “Open to Interpretation," which is a spoof on the Hansel and Gretel story on April 2 at the Phillipsburg tournament where they placed second.  This was just the first time the two had competed together and the first-ever speech meet for Reegon. Two days later at the league tournament, they placed first.

At Championships, Faith faced some tough competition in extemporaneous speaking and impromptu speaking, earning some low rankings in impromptu (7th, 5th, 5th) but showed improvement in extemp by her third round (5th, 6th, 2nd). Faith did not break into Semi-Finals, but “she represented DCHS well, and her professionalism never failed to impress the judges,” said Coach Wendelin.

While the seniors were competing at champs, freshman Gage Scott was at State Festival at Wichita Heights.  He earned a 'I' ranking for his humorous solo performance.

State speech festival is similar to state music in that he performed once and received a ranking and judge's comments, which concluded his day. According to Coach Wendelin, “The judge was very complimentary.”

“No matter how big or small of a team we have, I could not be more proud of the kids’ performances on Saturday,” said Coach Wendelin. “It was great to watch Dani and Reegon take a tried-and-true piece as far as it could go and earn their fifth place in Duet. Gage definitely represents a bright future for the speech team.”
