Read, Read, Read!

by Sheila Jansonius

May 01, 2008

As summer approaches our schedules start to fill up. Don't forget to encourage your children to read. Gone are the days when kids curled up with a nice little book when it was too hot to play outside. Today, too many students spend any free time they have watching TV, tinkering with their cell phones, or playing video games. Reading is the foundation upon which other academic skills are built. Mastery of reading skills in the primary grades has often been considered a good predictor of future academic success. Reading skills help develop creativity, critical thinking, vocabulary, self-esteem, spelling, writing, and can improve attention span. So… play ball, go swimming, visit grandma, attend a camp, etc., but don't forget to read!

Read, Read, Read!
