Decatur Community,
It is with great difficulty and a heavy heart that I am sharing this message. Carol Dixson, a legend in our school community who retired last year after 39 years of dedicated service, has passed away.
Miss Dixson was an integral part of OES for almost 4 decades going back to the mid-80s, teaching and shaping the minds of generations of 6th grade Red Devil students. Miss Dixson was far more than an educator; she was a leader, mentor, and team player on staff, a compassionate advocate for students, and a genuine inspiration to those who were fortunate enough to know her. Her legacy remains woven into the fabric of our district and community. Upon retiring, Mrs. Dixson told me that she had taught over 1,200 Oberlin students. Those students date back to the 80s, many of them current staff members, many of them children of former students she taught, and, of course, many of them our students currently in grades 7-12.
This news will have a big impact on many throughout our community, and recognizing that everyone grieves differently, counselors will be available for students and staff that may need guidance, someone to talk to, or just a listening ear.
On behalf of the entire USD 294 school community, I extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Miss Dixson’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time.
